Happiness is…

Happiness Add comments

I thought I’d add a section all about Happiness since it’s really all we’re striving for and can be so close to being reality with a simple change in perspective or action like the one below.

Happiness for me is putting the toilet seat down so my wife doesn’t fall in when she sits down.

I was fortunate enough to have a mother that pounded a few key things into my head as a child that are serving me well today. A few included ‘don’t chew with your mouth open’, ‘don’t ever tell a woman she’s fat’, ‘think before you speak’, and finally ‘put the toilet seat down when you’re done.’

The thing that gets me is how many men fight with the last one, putting the toilet seat down. I understand that it’s just as easy to put the seat down as it is to put it up, but that’s not what really matters. What really matters here is the risk associated with not remembering to do what you’re to do.

This means that if you’re a man and you are using the toilet and you forget to put the seat up, the worst that is going to happen is that you miss and hit the seat and have to wipe it up. Even if the lid is up, there’s no guarantee that you’re not going to miss the rim or floor and still have to wipe it up. If you’re a woman though and you forget to put the seat down, big consequence as your tush plops right down into that cold water and you may end up stuck to boot, risking embarrassment. This doesn’t even factor in the injury factor of bruising your tail bone or spine on top of it all. The kicker is that men run the same risk when they can’t stand to use the toilet, so they’re putting themselves in just as much limbo as they do to the rest of the women in the house.

Looking at the cost of each mistake, hitting the seat and having to wipe it up vs. falling into the toilet, I don’t think hitting the seat 100 times is as bad as falling in the toilet. I don’t know about you men out there, but I’d rather wipe the seat 100 times than risk my wife falling into the toilet and injuring herself. So looking at it from a risk perspective, it’s a no brainer that everyone should leave the toilet seat down when they’re done with it. Case closed.

Thanks mom!
